Reading Report Charts & Color Coding

    ZohaibBy Zohaib

Reports leans on a few chart types you might not use every day, a Sankey diagram, a donut and sunburst chart, and month-over-month badges. None of them require any special training, but a quick primer makes them click a lot faster.

    The Sankey diagram (Net Income)

Read it left to right. Income categories enter as separate bands on the left, merge into a single "Total Income" pool in the middle, then split back out into expense categories on the right. The width of every band is proportional to its amount, so the visually biggest flows are your biggest numbers, no need to compare exact figures by eye.

The donut and sunburst (Net Worth)

Each segment's size represents its share of the total, and hovering shows both its exact value and what percentage it makes up of its parent group. The sunburst variant adds an extra ring for a deeper breakdown when a single donut ring doesn't have room for enough detail.

    The color conventions

    • Green: assets, income, and inflows, generally the direction you want to see more of.
    • Red: liabilities, expenses, and outflows, generally the direction you want to see less of.

This convention holds consistently across Net Income, Net Worth, and the (currently hidden) Cashflow report, so once you've learned it in one place, it applies everywhere.

    Month-over-month badges

Summary cards on Net Worth show a percentage change versus last month. For an asset, an increase is good news. For a liability, a decrease is the good direction, even though it still displays as a plain percentage change either way, so it's worth pausing to think about which direction is actually favorable before reacting to the color.

Tip: Color and chart size are a fast first glance, not the final word. Always confirm the exact number in a tooltip before drawing a conclusion from a color alone.
