Understanding Auto-Generated Categories
By ZohaibWhen you complete signup, Fyscal automatically creates a starter set of income and expense categories for your account, so you're not starting from a blank list on day one.
Why this matters
Categories are the glue between your transactions, your budgets, and your reports. A transaction without a category can't be budgeted against or counted in a report, so having a sensible starter list from the moment you sign up means you can start categorizing transactions immediately instead of pausing to build a category system first.
What gets created for you
- Income: salary, freelance income
- Everyday expenses: groceries, rent, utilities, entertainment, transportation
This starter set is meant as a sensible default, not a final answer. Most people end up adding a few categories specific to their own life, and removing a couple that don't apply to them.
Customizing your categories
- Open Categories in the sidebar.
- Rename a category or change its emoji to make it easier to recognize at a glance.
- Add new categories specific to your life, for example a category for a hobby, a side business, or a recurring family expense.
- Delete ones you'll never use.
When to revisit your categories
It's worth a quick pass right after signup, and then again after your first month of real transactions once you can see what you're actually spending on. That second pass is usually when people notice a category they're missing, or one they never touch.
Tip: Categories are what tie your transactions to your budgets and reports, so it's worth getting the list right early rather than fixing it category by category later.
